"They bring out the best in all of us," Arenado said about the Giants. "Three World Series rings, always been one of the top-tier teams in our division. I really always want to beat them, because they've beat us in the past a lot, so it feels good to contribute and help us."

Arenado's homer gave the surging Rockies, winners of five of their last six games, a 6-0 lead with no outs in the fifth. The homer broke Arenado's tie with the Nationals' Bryce Harper , who hit his 21st home run against the Red Sox on Monday.

It was Arenado's 10th homer with two strikes this year. Only Aaron Judge (12), Francisco Lindor (10) and Jesus Aguilar (10) have as many. Arenado entered Tuesday hitting .275 with two strikes, fifth best in the Majors (min. 100 plate appearances).

Arenado's homer came on the eighth pitch of his at-bat against Stratton with a full count. After Stratton had thrown four fastballs, Arenado belted a changeup a Statcast-projected 419 feet over the center-field fence.

"You have to tip your cap sometimes," Stratton said. "He took a good swing there."

Arenado and the Rockies seem to be shaking their recent doldrums. From June 15 -- the day Arenado ended a slump at a career-worst 0-for-19 -- through Tuesday, Arenado is batting .338 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs. On Tuesday, Arenado was 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.

"The thing about Nolan is he has a plan when the games starts, and when the game unfolds, he gets a sense of what's going on and the situation," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "It doesn't surprise me, I don't want to take it for granted. All I know is I'm glad he did it."

Bronx Bombers load up to topple Braves

NEW YORK -- Through a half-season in the dugout, there has seemed to be only one topic that prompts Aaron Boone to lose his cool touch and throw his hands up in exasperation. The Bronx Bombers will not always have to rely on home runs to win, he insists, but on nights like this they sure do help the cause.

Red-hot Aaron Hicks hit his fifth homer in seven games, Kyle Higashioka cracked his second in the big leagues and Giancarlo Stanton added a late blast, helping the Yankees outlast the Braves for an 8-5 victory Tuesday evening at Yankee Stadium.

"Just keep fighting," Stanton said. "We all contributed. That's how it's going to be, and that's what we need."

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A cash-strappedmechanism to reinvest taxes in downtown Kalamazoo could be replaced with a new entity that will capture taxes from a larger area.

Monday, the City Commission declared its intent to create a Downtown Corridor Improvement Authority and set a public hearing for further discussion on Aug. 6. It would replace the DDA's tax increment financing (TIF) district, which has been hit with a revenue shortfall in recent years.

Downtown Kalamazoo, Inc. President Andrew Haan said the proposed authority would be a "fresh start" for economic development in downtown Kalamazoo. Without a new revenue source, downtown development efforts under the city are predicted to be insolvent within a year, a city report states.

The DDA captures a portion of property taxes generated by new development within a TIF district. Though the downtown has grown, a number of factors led to a decline in revenue from the TIF.

"The bottom line is the current TIF in place no longer brings in funds to support the downtown because of some significant tax appeals in last number of years as well as major demolitions of former Upjohn properties ," said Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain.

Bronson Healthcare Group is demolishing a former medical research facility for future use.

A Downtown Kalamazoo Economic Growth Authority would collect a portion of property taxes on new development, but from a new TIF district that reaches other areas of the city.

The DDA also levies a 1.9638 milltax on downtown properties. The tax rate won't change.

Chamberlain said the DDA would remain in place and continue to collectthat millage.

"The new Downtown Economic Growth Authority represents a continuation of the successful and impactful model used by the Downtown Development Authority, while allowing for key adjustments that reflect the changes to the downtown landscape over the last 29 years and are consistent with the priorities articulated by the community through the Imagine Kalamazoo process," Haan said.

The proposed boundaries of the DEGA is similar to those of the DDA, with a few key differences.
